Natural Hair Day by Brampton Manor female students takes Social Media by storm

In celebration of Black History Month, a group of young black female students from Brampton Manor Academy created a ‘Natural Hair Day.’ This was done on the 9th October to empower young black women into embracing their natural hair within the professional world.

‘Natural Hair Day’ was organised by bold sixth-form student and budding entrepreneur Bose Omoyeni with her fellow classmates to raise money for Black Girls Brunch UK, an event space and non-profit for black women to have a seat at their own table founded by Cairo Aibangbee.

“The reason I came up with the idea was because a lot of young black girls don’t really appreciate their natural hair, and instead they tend to wear wigs or braids,” said Bose.

After realising how much natural hair meant to her she rallied her classmates to come together. One of them, Kerena Arthur immediately supported the idea, “I thought it would be interesting to have just one day where people could participate,” said Kerena.

Kerena posted the photos on her business’ Instagram account, and it went viral just after 24 hours. “It quickly became my most liked picture and then overnight there were over a thousand likes. It was really amazing, ” said Kerena.

Many faces online soon discovered the beauty in the photos, including natural hair enthusiast Abibat Tract. She passed on the photos to the Founder of Black Girls Brunch UK, Cairo Aibangbee and it has received over 7,000 likes on Twitter and Instagram since.

Cairo Aibangbee was deeply moved by the photos, she remembers crying from happiness on the phone to her boyfriend. “The pictures were so beautiful, the first thing that stood out to me was their joy. It was just such a moving and an emotional experience for me.”

The photos made such an impact on the Founder that she printed them out and has decided to frame them once Black Girls Brunch UK gets an office space.

Bose and Kerena are happy they were able to contribute to Black Girls Brunch UK and Black History Month. They have helped inspire young black women into believing they can be confident in their authentic selves.

What a powerful way to start off Black History Month with young black females accepting their beauty and wanting others to do the same.
