The University of Kent students have been protesting for Women’s safety this week.

‘A girl’s night in’ was organised on Wednesday, which saw a boycott of all clubs in Canterbury, including the on-campus club Venue.

Venue, which is owned by the Student Union, remained open on Wednesday night but reportedly lost out on £27,000 from the boycott alone. They released a statement showing support for both the boycott and the cause.

“We know people are worried about drink spiking and safety, we’re determined to ensure you enjoy your night out”.

With a 108% increase in spiking in the past 3 years, and given the recent spiking allegation in club Chemistry, this week particularly has been about holding the University accountable for the role that they play in young women’s safety.

Kent union also showed support by marching alongside women on campus in a protest organised by ‘Kent Dance’ and ‘RespecttheNo’.

Zaid Mahmood, Vice President of UKCRespecttheNo, says: “as a man, we all need to do better to become allies. We all deserve to feel safe in our home away from home”.

The President of Kent Union, Aisha Dojhan, says: “It’s a matter of showing students that we stand by them. We hear them. And we’re here for them”.

Measures that are already in place by Kent Union include the safety zone app, a deferred cab payment and campus security available 24/7 to walk anyone home.
