Afro Caribbean society Medway (ACS) has become a vital group for minority students in university. Its aim is to welcome those from diverse backgrounds to fellowship.

During the pandemic, the community was lost due to the lack of social events and no funding. The society was going to be no longer. This year, ACS have made a huge change and the team are determined to continue their success.

ACS President Simi Joko said: “The general consensus was ACS wasn’t doing enough. This year I thought let’s change it up.

There’s less covid restrictions let’s have a good time.”

The ACS are currently working closely with GK unions, and held their first big event in The Deep end, Medway Campus.

The venue reached full capacity as over 400 tickets were sold.

GK Unions said the event had an amazing turnout and invited the ACS to host an event on November 19th.

Simi Joko, sees the future of the society as bright and hopes to do even bigger things.

ACS Creatives Officer, Daniella Bassler said: “When I first started Uni that was thing I looked for, so when I found, it was going to close, I was really upset.

People need societies like this.”

The ACS are also in collaboration with other universities across the UK, in a game show called The Big Clash.

They’re encouraging people to join and showcase their talents.

Daniella Bassler said: “It’s more of a communal thing, everyone can get together and have a chance to be heard.”

The ACS hope to continue their success as the academic year progresses.
