Gillingham, who have been without a manager for almost three weeks since Steve Evans left the team, were faced with the reality of being forced to leave Priestfield Stadium in a stalemate, after failing to draw against Shrewsbury.

Shrewsbury midfielder Elliott Bennett opened with an almost flawless goal, trying to curl a free – kick around a post. He was blocked by Swedish – born goalie Pontus Dahlberg, on loan from Watford.

Caretaker manager Steve Lovell brought striker John Akinde and forward Charlie Kelman, both of whom were subs in Gillingham’s losing match to Wigan.

Another close shot came from Akinde, who managed to fire from close range to the goal, but wasted another opportunity to score, nine minutes into the second half.

Finally, the closest score for Gillingham came from midfielder Danny Lloyd in the second half, who hit the outside of the post from a thirty-yard free – kick, conceding to a goal kick.

The draw means that Gillingham have gone 13 games without winning a single league game. They now sit 23rd on the League one table, out of a possible 24.

Gillingham’s next game is today, at 15:00 against Oxford United, currently sixth on the League Table.
