Cities in the UK mostly occupied by the older generation

A new survey shows that cities in the UK tend to have an older population.

The survey surprised many who believed that cities are usually inhabited by the younger generation.

The population of UK cities is growing older and this could have a big impact on the social and economical development.

The figures for Chatham, in Medway, show that the city sits somewhere in the middle with the average age of 38 years old.

An odd fact as Chatham has 3 Universities which share a very large campus. That should bring the city somewhere at the top of the list of the cities with the youngest populations.

However the NOMIS survey shows otherwise.  Chantelle Johnson, a student at the University of Kent, said: “There is nothing for us to do.” She said that the city is an historical one which does not have a lot of activities for students to do.

A younger population can bring a lot of advantages for cities such as attracting businesses. However, cities need to provide opportunities for young people to start their careers and afford houses.

Most of the students in Chatham leave right after they finish their studies which leaves the city with a middle-aged, older population.

As the Medway area is one that has been developing in the last few years and it is continuing that process, a younger generation is needed to improve the economical and social situation

The city with the youngest population is Slough  with the average age of 33 years old. Blackpool has the oldest population with the average age of 43 years.
