The Haig Housing Trust has announced that 100 veterans will walk 100 miles from Ypres, Belgium to the Cenotaph in London to celebrate the centenary of the First World War.

The march has been called ‘The Long Walk Home’ and the journey will finish on Remembrance Sunday.

After leaving Belgium, the veterans’ journey will go from Dover to Canterbury and Faversham; on the second day from Rochester and Rainham and on the third day the former soldiers will stay in Dartford and Sidcup before reaching London on the next day.

Brigadier James Richardson, Chief Executive, wants his charity to play a key role in remembering those who fought for their country.

“I think remembrance is incredibly important, and many people have said if we can’t learn from history we are deemed to repeat it”, he said.

The charity hopes that British people will support the walkers by hosting them overnight and joining them to raise awareness and fundsfor Haig, a charity housing veterans.

Across the UK, Haig has over 1,500 properties and they also offer special housing solutions for severely wounded and disabled Service and ex-Service personnel.
