Calls for NHS to increase survival rates of less curable cancers

Nearly 9000 people in the UK are diagnosed with Oesophageal cancer, which is the cancer of the food tube, making it the 6th most common type of cancer. It also falls under the 6 cancers with the lowest survival rate.

But in comparison to other type of more survivable cancer such as Breast cancer there lacks awareness around this type of cancer.

Harriet Thompson, who recently lost her father Andrew Thompson to Oesophageal cancer said she was did not even know what oesophagus was before her dad was diagnosed with it.

The Less Survivable Cancers Taskforce is urging the NHS to include their target to double the survival rates for the less survivable cancer (of the Brain, Stomach, Oesophagus, Lung, Liver, Pancreas) from 14% to 28% in the Cancer plan which is being updated now.

They have gained more than 15,000 signatures in their online petition which was launched only two weeks ago.
