Are turtles the new “ultimate survival food”?

      TURTLE

Turtles are supposedly the new ultimate survival as proven by the Robertson family that fed off of them to survive at sea for 38 days.

When the Robertson family were left to survive after being shipwrecked in the Pacific Ocean in 1971, they used the turtle meat to stay alive until they were rescued by a passing Japanese ship.

As Alex White from the British Nutrition Foundation explained it, if it’s a matter of life or death, there aren’t many alternatives.

“What would you consume would be more about surviving rather than heathy eating.  The main focus would be trying to consume any nutrient dense foods that are non toxic so turtles would fall into this category.”

Although turtles are amongst the few ingredients to fall on the doomsday survival list, their consumption isn’t encouraged in any other situation as they are still a critically endangered species. The increasing levels of plastic waste going into the ocean has been endangering the lives of many sea turtles that may assume the plastic is food and end up choking on it.

This is a serious problem that can be slowly fixed by people making small changes to help the environment. According to Paul Gibson, the founder of Turtle Savers UK, people can make changes in their own homes by reducing their plastic use by buying reusable bags, metal straws, loose items, and so on.

Turtle Savers UK is an organisation thats makes and sells reusable straws made out of stainless steel in order to reduce the use of plastic straws. All profit made from these straws is then donated to turtle conservation projects around the world.

“Once you do something small, like we use our own straws, it suddenly switches your consciousness to every other aspect of your life and that then guilt kicks in and influences you more strongly than I even I thought possible.”
