10 reasons why the Medway Campus is better than Canterbury’s

Medway has it all. Situated in a shipyard town, we are basically living in the scene of a pirate movie. Think Jack Sparrow. We get to live a real life cinematic experience, every single day.

In Medway, you’re forced to be street-smart. With staggering crime rates, it is all the more essential that you learn some self-defence techniques. Every student in Medway has at least thought about one karate move that they would use if the situation calls for it. We’re University of Kent students, but with an edge. We could kick bring someone down if we wanted to. We’re trained for it. Oh, and we always make sure to lock our doors and windows at night.

We have a handful of societies. And we’re lucky if they’re still active. Many societies have closed down in the past year. Luckily, we have an alternative: an hour bus ride to Canterbury, to join a society. It’s a win-win deal, especially with the heaps of assignments and essays we have. Essays aren’t as important as having fun and socialising though. Not at all.

Our high-street is a bustling cosmopolitan scene. We have every shop you can ask for. Farmers’ markets, the cobblers, salons… And even a New Look store if you want that extra oomph in your wardrobe. Oh, and the pound store. Nothing beats the pound store.

The night-life. Coopers is the ‘it place’. If you haven’t heard of it, you’ve been living under a rock. It has a cool, vintage and indie scene and it’s isolated from everything else, making it even more vintage. It’s our in-house bar and gig venue, and also serves food throughout the day. It’s the only bar on campus. But that’s great, because it leaves no competition for other bars. And because nobody goes there, we know we’ll have the place to ourselves. And who doesn’t enjoy a quiet bar, with a drink, all by themselves? Peace and tranquillity.

Medway’s night-life also includes clubs Tap and Tin, and the Casino Rooms. Both great places, if you enjoy routine in your life. It’s either Tap and Tin, or Casinos. You will never be spoilt for choice, and you know your friends will always be there. Who wants to meet new people? New people suck.

Dressing up for university is a breeze. Sweatpants are all the rage here in Medway. They’re Medway’s fashion staple, and we’re all buying into it. They’ve become every Medway student’s staple outfit. And they’re super comfortable too. We don’t try too hard.

For a night out, you can be sure to spot another fashion trend: Dresses that are actually tops. I mean, why buy a dress when you can buy a top and use it as a dress? Save some money. After all we’re students, and we don’t want to burn holes in our pockets. And, legs are good.

Coffee in our campus is not really coffee either. Head on to the bistro and you’ll taste something like charcoal and water. It gives you a caffeine boost, but I guess that’s all coffee is needed for anyway. At least we have a Starbucks. The Canterbury campus has a fully functioning Cafe Nero. But we all know Starbucks is better.

Also, we don’t have to worry about what to do in the weekend, because there’s nothing to do. Unless you like walking. You can walk. Somewhere. But, the weekend is not really a weekend if you live in Medway. So don’t worry about thinking of something to do and tire yourself out with that.

And Asda is our life. When it first opened, we were so excited. Seriously.
