Each year, Back to the Future proves that it predicted the future. At first hover boards, then fingerprint payments and now self lacing shoes.

Nike has revealed its new line of self-lacing trainers called HyperAdapt 1.0, which tighten and loosen around the wearer’s foot.

It uses a technology called “electro-adaptive reactive laces” which is activated through a button on the shoe and powered by a small battery.

At the launch event in New York, Nike CEO and president Mark Parker claimed that the HyperAdapt marks a “new era of sports – the era of personalised performance.”

Longtime Nike design mastermind Tinker Hatfield, who worked on the project, described the shoe as in “its alpha phase”, and said that early users may be polled for feedback.

The futuristic looking shoe is not the first to boast self-lacing technology, as Nike made the Air Mag trainers in 2015, but this is the first time the technology will be available for widespread purchase.

There is no official price tag or release date yet, but Nike said it will be released later this year in three colours.
