Women protest over Donald Trump’s policies

With Donald Trump’s inauguration looming over us today, a number of protests are taking place to fight against his policies, both in the USA and in the UK.

Women’s March on London is one of many protests and marches that will take place tomorrow, on the first day of Trump’s presidency. The Facebook event has gathered with 28,000 people going, with more than thirty thousand interested in it.

Ayesha Walawalkar said she is marching because she wants to send a signal to Trump, as well as to many others who are part of this rising tide of populism: “I want them to know that they have a fight on their hands; that just because we are liberal, decent people who do not espouse violence, they should NOT presume that we are not angry, and that we are not prepared to fight for the rights and freedoms of the most vulnerable people in our society.

“I will not go back to living in a world where women were objectified and treated as meat in the office every day. My mother would not accept it, I will not accept it, and I will not allow this to become the world my daughter inhabits.”

Caitlin Courogen, from the USA, said she is marching because she’s extremely disappointed with her government for allowing Trump to be put into power: “I want to exercise my constitutional right to peaceful protest even though I am not in America at the moment. I will not be silenced by a man who does not represent what the majority of the American population wants.”

Despite winning the electoral college, Donald Trump lost the popular vote by nearly three million votes. Natalie Steele said she is going because she supports every woman who needs to have their problems voiced today “whether that’s being grabbed by the pussy or losing their right to have an abortion.”

Ella Fallham said: “With Trump in, and Brexit moving up on the cards, there cannot be a more important time for women to stand up and demand their rights, particularly in relation to women’s healthcare.”
