According to the rail regulator, Office of Rail and Road (ORR), one-fifth of passengers buy the wrong tickets when they use machines instead of the counter.

The options for passengers can be confusing and consequently 7% of commuters underpay and could face a fine, whereas 13% overpay.

There are calls for passengers to receive refunds when they pay too much for their ticket.

Train companies have said they are simplifying fares which will help customers have clearer information when buying a ticket.

ORR also found that nearly two-thirds of people could not see any information on the machines about the type of tickets which could or could not be bought.

More than half said the machines did not explain the times when people and off-peak were valid and nearly one-third said there was no information on the machines about ticket restrictions.
