Environment Local On this day

Even Santa is avoiding single use plastic this Christmas

Christmas is a beautiful time filled with decorations and gifts, but it is also a time when environmental considerations go out the window along with our diets.

Even the tiniest Christmas gifts are wrapped up in mountains of plastic, all to be thrown away come Boxing Day. The tree you bought to decorate your home came bundled up in plastic netting for your convenience.

In the environmental crisis that we now find ourselves we cannot afford to be reckless with our purchases.

That is why companies like Edible Culture exist. They have opened a Christmas pop up store for the 4th year in the row, but it is no ordinary Christmas store- it is completely plastic free!

Edible Culture is a plastic free store all year round, but Christmas time they open a Christmas themed pop up store, based in the Abbey School in Faversham, as they fill their shelves with completely different products than usual.

Chris Williams, councillor in Faversham town council, works at the pop up store and said the store doesn’t sell any single use plastic and all the decorations come from local suppliers.

What can you do to be more sustainable over the holidays this year?

Williams encourages people to do 4 things:

  1. “Be more conscious about what you’re purchasing;
  2. Buy from local businesses;
  3. Consider your materials;
  4. Don’t buy mass produced products.”

Be aware whether if the product you are purchasing is non recyclable, because plastic takes roughly 500 years to decompose.

This means that all the plastic you threw away a decade ago, times a million, is still kicking around, seeping into our soil and killing our sea life.

Support local businesses! Businesses buy locally and use environmentally sound materials like textile, wood and ceramics.

Most importantly they are not mass produced, but created in small quantities which is safe for the environment.

This time of the year can be difficult on the purse strings, but when it comes to decorations- quality is better than quantity.

You will sleep better at night when you know everything is recyclable. Every little thing helps.
