It’s Where We Go: Kent’s Seaside Online Event

A new audiovisual event is collating memories of Kent beaches. ‘It’s Where We Go’ aims to encapsulate feelings ranging from nostalgia and loss to community and hope. The event, once a live performance performed across the South East coastline, has gone online due to the pandemic.

The event includes Whitstable, Herne Bay, Folkestone and beyond.

Event co-creator and artist, Tiffany Murphy said the move to the digital space had affected the experience in a positive way. “It’s changed the message of the event – it’s now a symbol of good times ahead.” The message of hope is “poignant” now in times like these and Tiffany acknowledges that looking back at happier times may be the way forward now.

The audiovisual element is combined with photography from Ian Howorth who captures moments of calm and joy at the beach. “It’s designed to transport you onto the seaside seeing as many have had that luxury taken from them.”

The sounds used in experience are all seaside-esque, fitting well with that element of transportation.

Tiffany added the story range aims to cover an array of emotions. “From happy to sad, some traumatic, whimsical, sometimes conversations like gentrification migration of youth. But all of the stories have the seaside at the heart of it.”

When asked the best way to experience the event, Tiffany recommended that the audience take the time to think and reflect while listening. The audience is encouraged to share their own memories to create a living archive.

The event was taken to the Coastival Festival, Herne Bay Festival and Tenby Arts Festival for people to view. It is now free to view and is accessible at any time.
