Heathrow Expansion may go ahead after all

Next week the Government is expected to announce that the expansion will go ahead, despite widespread protest against the plans.

The plans were considered last year folled by recommendations from the Airports Commission which was in favour of expansion. However Mrs May’s predecessor, David Cameron, rejected the plans. The current governments stance is an extravagant U-turn from this.

Speaking on Radio 4’s Today show, Sir Howard Davis, who was chair of the last years Airports Commission said: “I have laid my egg just over a year ago, the government now has to make its own assement because they are legally requiredto do that All the things that I have learnt in the year or so since I produced my report has reinforced me in me in the view that my conclusion then was the right one.”

He also alluded that the Eu referendum had impacted the results, saying “After brexit the case for Heathrow is stronger because Heathrow is the airport which links the UK to markets outside Europe”.

However Conservative MP for Richmond, Zac Goldsmith, has pledged to step down as MP to trigger a by-election should the government proceed with plans to expand Heathrow.

“I promised my constituents before I was ever elected in 2010 that I would trigger a by-election were the Government to give a green light to Heathrow expansion. My position has never changed.

“I’m committed to my constituents, I’m committed to fighting this campaign and I’m committed to winning this campaign – and I have every confident that will happen.”

This may come to a great relief to the Kentish population who have been fighting the plans to build an airport on the Thames Estuary, dubbed Boris Island. However there are speculations as to whether the UK will be able to fulfil its environmental pledge to the UN in expanding Heathrow.
