Nobel Peace Prize awarded Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos
The winner of the Nobel Peace is Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee said it was given to him for his efforts to make peace in his country.
This is despite the fact that the peace deal was voted down in a referendum less than a week ago.
It was therefore questioned if the Norwegian Nobel Committee disrespected the Colombian democracy as the peace-making effort was rejected, but the committee chairwoman Kaci Kullman Five said that this was not the case.
She thinks the Colombians rejected the specifics of the peace deal, not peace itself, and she is hopeful that this award will encourage leaders of the country to continue to strive for peace and not to let tensions re-emerge.
She was also asked why the prize was given only to Santos and not split between the parties involved in the peace negotiations, including Farc leader Timochenko.
Her reply to this was that there had been several involved parties, but Santos is the one who has taken the first and historical step towards peace.
She said: “He went all in.”
The committee’s reason to give the prize to Santos is to give him strength to finish the demanding peace process. It is meant as a tribute to the Colombian people who have not given up on peace, they said.
The Colombian President had not been notified in advance of the press conference, but he will be notified as soon as possible.
