The rock of Gibraltar- Dartford goalkeeper Deren Ibrahim speaks about facing Belgium

When Dartford goalkeeper Deren Ibrahim found out last year that he could qualify for Gibraltar through his grandma he probably never imagined that one day he’d come up against the players he cheers on as a Chelsea fan.

But that’s just what happened when Ibrahim came up against Belgium in a 6-0 World Cup Qualifier defeat.

The 25-year-old said: “To play against them you only dream of it. I’m a massive Chelsea fan so to go from watching Courtois and Hazard to actually playing against them was an unbelievable feeling.”

The ‘keeper, who has been at Dartford for all of his career, conceded the fastest every World Cup qualifying goal when Benteke scored after seven seconds.

However Ibrahim was pleased with his side’s performance: “Any goalkeeper who played in that game would have conceded. But overall I think it was a good performance.”

Ibrahim saw the chance of playing Belgium as an opportunity to showcase his talents.

He said: “when you’re playing for Dartford in the league you’re the more dominant team so you might not get loads of saves. But the Belgium game I faced plenty of shots and I thought I did well.”

Despite the result he still received messages of support from friends and family when they found out that he was playing in the game.

“I went to the game with 90 percent battery on my phone, but after all the texts, instagrams, twitter and Facebook messages I got, my battery was down to five percent after the match.”

The Darts stopper faces a return back to normal life as his side play Bath City away in the league on Saturday.
