Glastonbury festival cancelled for second year in a row

Yesterday Britain’s largest and most iconic festival Glastonbury announced it would be cancelled for the second year in a row due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It adds on more heartache from the past year for music enthusiasts who saw Glastonbury 2021 as a fitting way to return to normality.

Over the years Glastonbury has been the highlight of British summer, whatever the weather, Glastonbury always delivered on the fields and on our screens.

I spoke to James Kilpin who works in the festival industry, and also James, Anton and Ellen, who were each supposed to go to Glastonbury this year. The disappoint was evident, but as was their optimism.

“We can’t be naive” said James Davies. Who believes that cancelling such a major event, albeit again, is necessary to contain the virus.

“Whether it’s just my optimism or maybe just wishful thinking, I do believe we will see the return of festivals in some form before the end of this year”

Other festivals may go ahead, but none can fill the gaping hole that is Glastonbury. Even those that have to wait another year for that legendary Somerset experience believe that it’s probably sensible it doesn’t go ahead. One thing’s for sure however, when it does return, you can bet it’ll be worth the wait.
