One in six people are overeducated for their job
A report by the Office of National Statistics has revealed the one in six people in the UK are over-educated for their job.
The results show that between the months of October and December 2015, 16.1% of the population is in a job that they are defined as “overeducated” for.
Where 15.9% of men are classified as overeducated, 16.5% of women are classified as overeducated.
The rise in overeducated employees has been a trend since 2006when the UK average was 13.3%, however the gap between men and women as closed since.
People who were defined as “undereducated” which equated to 15.1% mirrored these results during the same period (15.1% men and 15.2% women).
However there has been a sharp decline in the proportion of undereducated workers from a UK average of 17.4% since 2004.
Of the population of those undereducated, the ONS found that 21.2% of people aged 50-64 were the most undereducated for their jobs. This is double the proportion people in the 16-24 and 25-34 age categories.
