More than ever democracy has proved to be crucial as people in the US fight for their right to have their vote counted

Just hours ago Biden took the lead in the Republican stronghold state Georgia and later today Pennsylvania, a state Trump claimed to win on election night. With former Vice President Joe Biden in the lead in Pennsylvania and 98% of the votes counted he is very close to winning the state and the 20 electoral college points, winning the presidency along with it.

President Donald Trump’s path to maintaining his position in the White House is a little longer. He must win three of these four states: Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada, as well as Pennsylvania.

Donald Trump’s war against the media has been at an all time high as most of what he has said since Election Day has been flagged as spreading misinformation. Over the three days since the election Twitter has added warning labels to nine of the President’s election-related tweets labelling them as ‘might be misleading,’ and just yesterday many broadcasters cut off his speech with a warning that what he was saying was in fact false.

This, however, is not the first time broadcasters have interrupted the president. In March several broadcasters chose not to broadcast Trump’s announcement on the coronavirus as it was contradicting his own health experts.

Donald Trump’s campaign has an uphill battle ahead with many states going from red to blue as the count continues. Last night Trump claimed that his victory is being snatched from him by illegal votes. “If you count the legal votes, I easily win,” the President said. He also claimed that unmarked votes with no postmarks were being counted. Both statements are not based on any facts.

“We’re hearing stories that are horror stories. … We think there is going to be a lot of litigation because we have so much evidence and so much proof,” Trump claimed from the White House last night. AP (Associated Press) clarified that Trump has, in fact, produced no evidence supporting his claims and that the ballot counting process has been running smoothly, despite the pandemic.

One of Trump’s main concerns is the possibility of ballots arriving and being counted after election day. This is baseless because no presidential election has had all the votes counted the same day and there is no law stating that this must be the case. Even Trump himself  was only announced the winner of the election in 2016 on the 9th of November. Due to the pandemic, the amount of mail-in ballots is much higher this year and has made the process slightly slower, which was to be expected.

Donald Trump’s campaign filed lawsuits in battleground states Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia on Wednesday. He raised his concerns about mail-in ballots and demanded more access for observers. He also asked Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court to join an appeal and throw out mail-in ballots that arrive three days after election day, a decision the court decided on back in October.

Campaign spokesman Andrew Bates said legal challenges were not the behavior of a winning campaign. “What makes these charades especially pathetic is that while Trump is demanding recounts in places he has already lost, he’s simultaneously engaged in fruitless attempts to halt the counting of votes in other states in which he’s on the road to defeat,” Bates said in a statement.

The president’s bid to disvalidate the mail-in ballots has a severe effect on the election because at least 103 million people voted early, either by mail or in-person, representing 74% of the total votes cast in the 2016 presidential election.
