Leicester Tigers test positive

Leicester Tigers have shut down training after multiple positive coronavirus tests.

Players will now continue training individually at home in preparation for their first game of the season against Gloucester in two weeks.

A club statement said: “Health, wellbeing and safety are paramount and all players and staff are being monitored by Tigers medical staff, in addition to their families being offered support where necessary.”

Support staff, players and coaching staff are among those who tested positive, and many more are now in precautionary self-isolation despite testing negative.

We do not yet know which players have tested positive but hopefully they will be given the all clear to play their first game of the Gallagher Premiership season.

It’s not a great start to the Tigers 2020/21 season, and after finishing second-last in the previous season, they will need all the help they can get to turn around last year’s performance.

This marks another rugby team impacted by COVID restrictions. Last month’s England-Barbarians game was called off as members of the Barbarians team were seen breaching their ‘COVID-bubble’ in a pub.

The incident cost the RFU more than £1 million in revenue as the tickets and streaming rights to the right had to be refunded.
